Calicut International Airport

Located in Karipur in Malappuram district near Kozhikode, Calicut international Airport, which is also known as Karipur Airport is one of three international airports connecting Kerala with different domestic and international destinations. The airport started its operation in 1977 under the leadership of late K P Kesava Menon, a freedom fighter and got the status of an international airport in February 2006 after infrastructure to handle international flights was developed. Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode is located at a distance of 26 kilometers from the Calicut railway station and connects Kerala with different parts of India and the world.

  • About the operation: Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode was set up from the fund collected by Gulf Malyalis because at that time the Union Government did not have sufficient funds. When the airport started operation it did not have any special facilities but since the year 1990, Calicut International Airport has seen huge development which includes extension of the runway from 6000 feet to 9000 feet. As the airport is located in a valley and is surrounded by hills on all sides, Airport Authority of India (AAI) introduced the lead-in lighting for the first time in the country. The system has been in use since October 2003. The lead-in lighting system gives the pilot a better visual guidance along a particular path and helps the aircrafts to avoid hazards. Apart from the lead-in lighting system Calicut International Airport also has got solar-powered aviation obstruction lights. The lights have been fixed on eight hilltops around the airfield of the airport. Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode is currently serving domestic airlines like Air Deccan (flights to Bangalore), Air India (flights to Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram), Air India Express (flights to Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram) and flights of Jet Airways to Mumbai. The airport also has international operations and serves airlines like Sri Lankan Airlines, Air India Express (flights to Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, Sharjah), Air India (Dammam, Jeddah, Kuwait) and flights of Indian Airlines to Doha, Dubai, Muscat and Sharjah.

  • Facilities available: Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode is going through massive modification plans to develop facilities that an international airport should have. At present the airport has got facilities like separate terminals for domestic and international terminals, information desk, seating arrangement for passengers, food stall, car parking facilities to name just a few.
