History:
The airline was set up in May 1985 by the Dubai government. It started functioning with flights to Mumbai and Delhi followed by Karachi in September. A single Airbus A300 and a Boeing 737-300 were taken in lease from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Later, two Boeing 727-200 were taken from the UAE's Royal Flight. These aircraft were used till Emirates started taking delivery of a fleet of the new Airbus A300-600R and A310-300 wide-bodied aircraft.
Emirates got the 'airline of the year' award for the first time in 2001 and held on to the success in 2002 It is totally owned by the Government of Dubai and has around 20,579 employees, ever increasing due to the expansion of the business.
A statistics indicated that in 2005 Emirates was among the top-ten airlines in the world in terms of passengers (13.98 million) carried and kilometers (59.3 million) flown.

Emirates has planned to feature docking capability for Apple Computer's iPod portable music and video player in the middle of 2007.
In November 2006, Emirates had signed a business deal with mobile communications form AeroMobile. This will provide the passengers to use their mobile phones to call or send text messages to people on the ground.
