Golden Temple

Sri Harmandir Sahib is another name for Sri Darbar Sahib or golden temple. The name, golden temple was mainly given to this wonderful sculpture, because of the golden coating over the temple. The name Harmandir Sahib is given because this place is the seat of Hari or God. All the Sikhs have the wish of visiting Sri Amritsar, and paying their homage to Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Guru Arjan Sahib was entrusted with the duty of the fifth Nanak. Guru Arjan planned to built place of worship for the Sikhs and surprisingly, he, himself was the mastermind behind this wonderful architecture of Sri Harmandir Sahib. Earlier, Guru Amardas planned to excavate the holy tank or the Amritsar or Amrit Sarovar. He was the third Nanak. Ultimately, Guru Ramdas Sahib turned this planning into reality, under the supervision of Baba Budha ji. The construction work on both the Sarovar and the town started in 1570. In 1577 A.D. the entire construction work completed.

The most astonishing fact is that, Guru Arjan Sahib got the foundation of the golden temple laid by a Muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mir ji of Lahore on the1st of Magh, 1645, according to the Bikrmi Samvat or December, 1588. Guru Arjan Sahib was helped by some prominent Sikh personalities like Baba Budha ji, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Sahlo ji and many other devout Sikhs in supervising the construction work.

The bridge connects the temple with the 13 feet wide “Pardakshna” or circumambulatory path. It encircles the main shrine and it leads to the ‘Har ki Paure’ or steps of God. The Guru Granth Sahib is continuously read on the first floor of ‘Har ki Paure’.

Sri Harmandir Sahib or the golden temple is a three-storied building. The front of the main temple faces the bridge. This front of the temple is decorated with cusped arches and ornate decorations.

The architecture of golden temple balances a harmony between the Muslim and the Hindu architecture. According to some experts this architectural work itself gave birth to an independent Sikh school of architecture in the history Indian art.
