Sri Harmandir Sahib is another name for Sri Darbar Sahib or golden temple. The name, golden temple was mainly given to this wonderful sculpture, because of the golden coating over the temple. The name Harmandir Sahib is given because this place is the seat of Hari or God. All the Sikhs have the wish of visiting Sri Amritsar, and paying their homage to Sri Harmandir Sahib.
Guru Arjan Sahib was entrusted with the duty of the fifth Nanak. Guru Arjan planned to built place of worship for the Sikhs and surprisingly, he, himself was the mastermind behind this wonderful architecture of Sri Harmandir Sahib. Earlier, Guru Amardas planned to excavate the holy tank or the Amritsar or Amrit Sarovar. He was the third Nanak. Ultimately, Guru Ramdas Sahib turned this planning into reality, under the supervision of Baba Budha ji. The construction work on both the Sarovar and the town started in 1570. In 1577 A.D. the entire construction work completed.
