|
|
Konark is just one of the marvels created by the ancient Indian architects. Among the tourist attractions of Orissa, Konark is the most well-known and one of the best examples of the pure Indian art. A colossal temple inside Konark has been dedicated to the Sun God. The magnificence of the great sun temple is palpable in the ruins of the great temple. This temple reflects the genius of the architects who visualized and sketched the idea of this architectural wonder in his mind. The Golden triangle of Orissa consists of Bhubaneshwar, Konark and Puri. Sun temple Konark is the living museum of a plethora of architectural wonders curved on the walls of the sun temple.

Konaditya is another name for Konark. In fact, the name Konark is derived form the words "Kona" or Corner and "Arka" or Sun. The Sun temple of Konark is almost at the north eastern corner of Puri or the Chakrakshetra. Arkakshetra is another name for Konark.
This sun temple was built in 1278 CE by Narasimha Deva, the King of Ganga. It is indeed one of the grandest temples in India and seeing its grandeur it was named, the Black Pagoda. Some times in the late 19th century the remnants of this temple were excavated. The tower on the Garbagriha is still missing, but in this condition also the temple is absolutely awe inspiring.
Legends say that Samba, the king of Krishna and Jambavati once entered the bathing room of Krishna's wives. Krishna cursed him with leprosy. There was a way of evading the curse by worshipping the sun God on the sea coast at the north east of Puri. Samba went to Konaditya Kshetra and envisioned the image of Surya seating on lotus. Samba worshipped Surya there and was relieved of his curse.
It is said that the foundation of the Sun temple Konark was not that strong to bear the weight of the heavy magnetic dome atop the sun temple. Later on that dome was removed and destroyed because this dome was causing ships to crash near the seashore. The image of the Sun god has been taken to Puri.
The temple is made in a shape of a giant chariot of the sun god with 24 wheels, each around 10 feet in diameter, with elaborate carvings on the walls.
